Understanding Scrap Metal Prices: What Affects Rates in the UAE Market

If you have ever sold scrap metal, you have probably noticed that prices change from week to week - sometimes significantly. Understanding what drives these price movements can help you time your sales and set realistic expectations. Here is a breakdown of the key factors affecting scrap metal prices in the UAE.

01

Global Commodity Markets (LME)

The London Metal Exchange (LME) is the primary benchmark for global metal prices. Copper, aluminum, zinc, lead, and nickel all trade on the LME, and these prices ripple through to scrap markets worldwide - including the UAE.

When global economic activity is strong (construction, manufacturing, infrastructure), demand for raw metals rises and LME prices go up. Conversely, during slowdowns, prices fall. Scrap metal prices typically track LME prices at around 70-90% of the refined metal value, depending on grade and local conditions.

02

Local Supply and Demand

While global markets set the baseline, local UAE conditions affect final prices. The UAE has a strong domestic manufacturing base that consumes recycled metals, and is also a major export hub. When local foundries are running at high capacity, they pay premium prices for scrap. When export markets are strong, scrap gets diverted and local buyers compete harder.

03

Material Grade and Quality

Not all scrap is priced equally. Material grade massively affects the rate you receive:

  • Bare bright copper wire: highest copper grade, premium pricing
  • #1 copper: clean copper with minimal oxidation
  • #2 copper: copper with some contamination, lower rate
  • Insulated copper cable: priced based on recovered copper content
  • Mixed aluminum: lower than sorted aluminum
  • Clean aluminum sheets: premium aluminum grade
04

Seasonal and Cyclical Factors

The UAE construction industry has cyclical patterns. Major project completions generate scrap spikes, while new project starts increase demand. Ramadan and summer months sometimes see slower commercial activity, which can soften prices temporarily. Year-end often sees price movements as buyers manage inventory.

05

Transportation and Processing Costs

The price you receive is the market value minus processing and transportation costs. Scrap buyers need to sort, weigh, transport, and often further process materials before selling to foundries. These costs are built into their offer. This is why pickup location, quantity, and material condition all affect your quote.

How to Check Current Prices

Because prices change constantly, the best way to know current rates is to request a fresh quote. At Wadi Al Khair Trading, we update our rates daily based on market conditions. A quick WhatsApp message describing what you have to sell will get you an instant quote reflecting today's market.

Scrap pricing is not fixed - it is a living market. The more you understand it, the better decisions you can make about when and how to sell.
